So one last home game before we leave the Premiership.
It's been a season like no other I can remember, disappointment after disappointment, but it's been a long time coming. Well intentioned he may be, but Randy Lerner has wrecked Aston Villa. You can't fault the man for putting money into his club - very few owners have made the kind of investment he has over the years - but in a sense this only makes it worse. Just how can you spend so much money yet still end up in the position we're in?
Poor executive appointments, a seemingly endless stream of managers, the bizarre decision to 'blow' the Benteke/Delph windfall on a group of players the vast majority of whom had no Premiership experience whatsoever, a Club Captain on holiday as his team sinks below the waves - we've had it all.
And as this sad decline reaches its inevitable conclusion, the people I feel most sorry for are the 500 or so staff who will now lose their jobs. They served their club faithfully, but never drew mega-wages while sitting on the side-line whinging. I salute you all and wish you the very best in finding new employment.
We'll be there this afternoon ... will you Mr Lerner?
