reflections on mortality

Dear Sheddists,

it's our final morning in Copenhagen and we make our way across to the National Museum of Denmark just down the road from City Hall.

We spend most of our time in the Danish Prehistory section and the Viking Exhibition both of which have a haunting beauty perhaps best personified by the Egtved Girl. A young maiden from the Bronze Age, her last mortal remains have been preserved in a burrowed-out oak coffin.

The glass works, musical instruments and silver bowls on display further through the exhibition give lie to the war-like reputation of the Vikings.  They produced art and craft of the most stunning beauty.

Pausing for a moment over a refreshing drink in the Museum Cafe we reflect on our own mortality.  Our journey through the museum has taken us from primordial times to the pinnacle of Viking culture in just a few fleeting moments.

And then, all too soon, it's time to make our way back to the hotel to collect our bags and set off for the airport for the flight home.

Best regards,
