compton verney

Dear Sheddists,

we celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary a few days ago with a trip to Compton Verney, a fantastic treasure trove of art and antiquities set deep in the heart of Warwickshire countryside.

We came to see 'The Art of Perception', an exhibition tracing a line of development from Georges Seurat and pointillism to  Op Art and Bridget Riley. To say it dazzled would be an under-statement - the works on display were so mind-blowing we found ourselves in constant fear of major visual disturbance!

Regrettably, as the exhibition prohibited the use of cameras, I cannot show you what was on display. You will just have to take a look yourselves! Instead, I share below some photos from the Chinese collection, of my favourite permanent exhibitions at Compton Verney.

Fittingly for our  anniversary there was a private function in the House enabling me to take a few 'grab-shots' of a wedding party sheltering beneath an enormous tree in the grounds. So very different to our own wedding so many years ago!

Our first meal together on our own after we exchanged vows was fish and chips, eaten from a newspaper whilst walking the length of the beach where we had courted as teenagers just a few years earlier. It was all we could afford, but it tasted better than the finest banquet in the land.

We've kept up the tradition of eating fish on each anniversary since to remind us of how our married life began. This year was no exception - a glorious dinner of fish-fingers, chips and peas!

Yours as ever,
