dreams and nightmares - no. 115

the drowning

we dodged the heat
between
trees and weeds
and
spuming fungus
bound aloft in poison ivy

the swamp
breathed dark water
curdled with leaves
while a frog padded
impassively
among the lace-filigree
water-lilies
to find its resting place

drowning here in summer's garden
