should you find yourself in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and fancy a stroll down the left-hand side of Pilgrim Street toward the river you'll eventually chance upon a small nondescript glass doorway close to the the bottom.
It fronts up the equally nondescript Commercial Union House, an anonymous 1970's speculative development whose prefabricated blocks jut out awkwardly across the pavement below like some obese, cubist paunch of poorly digested concrete.
Do not be put off by appearances though, it's well worth venturing inside!
A thoroughly enjoyable experience
The building is now home to a number of small businesses, one of which is 586 Records
I had the pleasure of visiting a few days ago and a thoroughly enjoyable experience it was too. I love real record shops, the sort where you can find something you've never heard of before, and there's lots to be discovered here.
I left smiling with a vinyl cargo comprising two fantastic compilations ....

Tony Daly, the owner of 586 Records, is friendliness personified. He's clearly a man in love with music and his passion is self-evident from even the briefest of conversations. You'll find it's a real pleasure to meet him and I will certainly be calling back again next time I visit my home-town
